Vital Endangered Animals

Big Whales & Phytoplanktons:

Not only are whales gigantic, but they are crucial to our planet. They increase reproduction and provide nutrients that are very scarce in the ocean, to the phytoplanktons. These microorganisms provide about 50%~80% of the oxygen we breathe, and further take in great amounts of carbon dioxide: with photosynthesis. About “hundreds of thousands of tons of carbon each year”[1] are sequenced by phytoplanktons. Furthermore, a single big whale takes in about 33 tonnes of CO2 in their lifetime, and in their death, they provide for ecosystems in the depth of the ocean and takes the CO2 with them for years.[2] Both the smallest and biggest organisms work together to delay the effects of climate change evoked by humans and balance the biosphere. We humans depend on phytoplanktons and phytoplanktons depend on whales.

Bees

The fuzzy pollinators are one of the most vital species on Earth. They contribute heavily towards the life cycles of several plant species, of which 70% are crops we consume, such as apples, tomatoes, and almonds. However, their symbiotic relationship with plants (and by extension, us) is being threatened by habitat destruction, loss of food sources, and pesticides. Although it is hard to admit, we’re part of the reason why bee populations are shrinking--but here’s what you can do to combat it. You can learn more about the species and the problems that they are facing by simply delving into the topic, create a bee hotel (nice CAS project!), or complete bee surveys in order to further the knowledge we possess regarding the problem. To learn more about the projects you can pursue, check out Friends of the Earth.
